Is glaucoma hereditary.

Glaucoma is a serious health condition that occurs when intraocular pressure causes damage to your eye’s optic nerve, and gets worse over time. Without treatment, Glaucoma can cause total permanent blindness within a few years.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness for people over 60 years old. It tends to be inherited and may not show up until later in life. It usually affects both eyes, but it may be worse in one than the other. Many forms of glaucoma have no warning signs. The effect is so gradual that you may not notice a change in vision until the condition is at an advanced stage.

Causes of Glaucoma

It usually happens when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. The extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, thereby damaging the optic nerve which transmits images to your brain. Less common causes include : blunt or chemical injury to the eye, severe eye infection, eye surgery to correct another condition can bring it on (rare).

Symptoms of Glaucoma

Most types of Glaucoma typically cause no pain, and produce no symptoms until noticeable vision loss. Most symptoms include : severe eye pain, blurred vision, red eyes, sensitivity to light, nausea and vomiting.

Risk Factors

Some illness and health conditions can lead to Glaucoma. They are as follows : old age, diabetes, hypothyroidism, eye injuries, eye surgery, myopia (short-sightedness).

Complications

When left untreated, it can cause permanent loss of vision (Total blindness).

Proper Treatment of Glaucoma

Measures like applying eye drops are taken. It reduces its outflow, lowering eye pressure. Side effects may include : allergies, redness, stinging, blurred vision, and irritated eyes.

Every health challenge can only be treated when proper diagnosis is met with the right treatment.

NOTE : Glaucoma is hereditary, it tends to run in families. Genes related to glaucoma have been identified by scientists. You just have to take necessary health care of yourself and other members of the families..
